Half the strokes on your card are putts, and most golfers spend a twentieth of their equipment budget on the club that hits them. The rack is by the putting strip for exactly that reason.
Blade or mallet
Blades reward a stroke that arcs slightly and suit players who aim by feel. Mallets are more forgiving on off-centre strikes and their alignment lines suit players who aim by looking. Neither is better. The one that looks right to you when you set it behind the ball is the one that will go in more often, because you will trust it.
How to actually choose one
Take three off the rack. Roll five putts with each from about three metres. Keep the one you stopped thinking about. That is the whole method, it takes ten minutes, and nobody at the counter will hurry you.
